On September 24, I attended a gathering of key players from the Health
Sciences Center and Stony Brook University Hospital at a planning retreat
to discuss meeting the challenges of the third decade. The outcome of this
session was a clarification of our strategic direction and resources needed
to differentiate the hospital as the academic tertiary center of Long
Island. I believe the proposed enhancements will have a direct impact on
solidifying our revenue base and expanding our market share by providing LI
residents optimal care closer to home.
Over the next five years, a $250 million capital investment will
restructure and rehabilitate the hospital. There will be an increase in the
number of beds from 523 to 710 by the Year 2010 in order to accommodate a
projected increase in volume. This growth will be necessary to enhance
current programs and launch Centers of Excellence in Cardiac, Cancer, and
Perinatal Medicine. I have no doubt that the infusion of resources will
impact the upward spiral growth of our excellence in research and
education, making this an exciting time for all of us.
An aggressive implementation plan was outlined, and the first steps are
already underway regarding the reconfiguration of Level 5 of the hospital.
I will be sharing more details on this important topic as they become
available—but clearly there is more positive news to come.

• At the School of Dental Medicine, Allan J. Kucine, Associate
Dean for
Academic Affairs, has been appointed Acting Chair, Department of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery.
• The School of Health, Technology and Management has received federal
funding for a Health Careers Opportunity program to establish a partnership
with the Riverhead and Greenport School Districts and four community-based
organizations. The program involves job shadowing and other opportunities
for students to interact with healthcare professionals.
• The School of Health, Technology and Management has established an

• The School of Medicine's "Mini-Med School" has a
waiting list for the
second straight year. The seven-week program began October 4.
Seven senior medical students have been elected to the Stony Brook
chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha, a national medical honor society established
in 1902.
• The School of Nursing collected $20,000 for the victims of the World
Trade Center disaster to be donated to the American Red Cross. The total
includes a contribution from the Staller Center and matching corporate
funds.
• The School of Social Welfare's 15th Annual "Counseling
and Treating
People of Colour: An International Perspective" conference is planned for
November 28 - December 2nd, 2001 at the San Diego Marriott in California.
The conference presenters include nationally recognized experts in the
fields of Health, Mental Health, Substance Abuse, AIDS, Violence, and
Education. This much anticipated event brings practitioners together from
around the world to participate in a holistic cultural learning experience.
School of Social Welfare's Professor Abraham Lurie, Ph.D. is being
honored by the Variety Child Learning Center located in Syosset, NY.
Variety Child Learning Center is a pre-school program for children with
developmental disabilities. Dr. Lurie is being honored for serving as the
first President of the organization on the occasion of its 35th
anniversary. This occasion is also being observed to mark the completion of
an addition to the building as a result of a matching grant from the Kreske
Foundation. Dr. Lurie serves as a member of their Board of Trustees.
• During the week of October 22nd, the Veterans Home will celebrate
its
10th anniversary with a series of activities and events designed to
highlight its first decade of service to Long Island's veterans. The
week-long celebration will include a block party celebration on October
22nd from 4pm to 6 pm, and performances by the Xavier Cugat Orchestra and
the New York Metropolitan Troupe of the USO. In addition, on Wednesday,
October 24th, the Vets Home will recognize 49 members of its staff for
providing ten years of service to its residents and their families.
• The Long Island Cancer Center will host a Fall Fashion Festival at the
Three Village Inn on Thursday, October 18 from 6:30-10:30 PM. Tickets are
$40 and include a full-course dinner. Call 4-2390 for further information.
