As the Health Sciences Center sustains its growth in stature, and as our
faculty and staff continue to enhance the education and research
opportunities we provide, I believe it is more important than ever to
communicate within, and among, the HSC departments and schools.
These messages also will allow me to communicate to you, in a timely
fashion, developments that you should know about. This way, when important
issues arise, you will have the most accurate information as quickly as
possible.
To ensure that as much information as possible is shared, I have asked each
of the five HSC schools to submit to me, on a monthly basis, news about
their areas. The first of those reports follows below. In addition,
representatives from other shared areas, including research and the
library, have also been invited to keep us informed.
As part of this overall communication initiative, we are currently involved
in planning an Interactive Kiosk system. There will be two information
Kiosks at important locations on Level 5 near the escalators to the HSC
from the Hospital, and on Level 2, at the Bookends Cafe. They will be
equipped with touch screens, enabling users to get directions within the
HSC, print maps, find general information, obtain lecture information, and
access news about events.
I think the effort of enhancing the dissemination of information is
critical to the way we operate and to the way we promote ourselves to the
public. But the first step is making sure we communicate with each other.

From the School of Medicine
The SOM welcomed the Class of '05 at the traditional White Coat ceremony.
The class—54 women and 48 men come from 52 undergraduate schools. They
range in age from 20 to 35. For others with an interest in medicine, the
Mini-Med School begins its second year on October 4 and continues every
Thursday evening until November 15. The popular lecture series will explore
a range of topics relating to anatomy, genetics, media medicine, medical
myths, and pain management. The Mini Med School is free of charge and open
to all students, faculty, and staff, as well as to the general public.
Pre-registration is required. Dr. Jack Stern, Chair, Department of
Anatomy, was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor by the State
University of New York.
From the School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Lorne Golub, Professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology,
is the 2001 recipient of the American Dental Association Norton M. Ross
Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. Dr. Barry Waldman has won the
Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the President's Award for
Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Jonathan Garlick and Dr. Marcia Simon,
Professors in the Department of Oral Biology, received a $1.1 million grant
from the Department of the Army to conduct research into the causes and
treatment of skin blisters.
From the School of Health, Technology and Management
The Lori R. Brickman Memorial Fund was established to provide scholarship
and educational assistance for students. Brickman, (a 1982 graduate of the
school and a long-time employee of the Hospital), died in June after a
lengthy battle against cancer. For information on making donations, contact
dfirestone@epo.hsc.sunysb.edu. The Department of Physical Therapy has
completed the renovation of its teaching library and also has received
approval from the New York State Department of Education to offer a
Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Occupational Therapy has completed
construction of its Living Learning Center, to be used as a teaching lab.
School of Nursing
The SON has received the certificate of accreditation for the Surgical
Technology Program from the Association of Surgical Technology and the
American Medical Association. The 10 years of certification is the maximum
allowed and is rarely given for a first-time accreditation.
School of Social Welfare
Michelle Cavalieri has been honored as Student of the Year by the Suffolk
Division of the New York State Chapter of the National Association of
Social Workers. Michelle is now in her second year of study and has just
been elected President of the Graduate Student Government. She has also
played a key role in helping to organize events for the School's Alumni
Association.
Research & Scientific Affairs
Helene Benveniste, M.D., PH.D. of the Department of Anesthesiology, has
been awarded a NYSTAR contract in conjunction with the Office of Scientific
Affairs to acquire an actively shielded, 7.2 T-horizontal micro-bore rodent
MRI. The Micro MRI Center for Functional Rodent Imaging will be located at
Brookhaven National Laboratory. Dr Benveniste was recently recruited from
Duke University and is a recognized expert in the field of MRI research.
HSC Library
The HSC Library welcomes Eric Djiva Kamal as Senior Programmer Analyst in
the Systems Department. Eric has extensive knowledge of a broad spectrum of
information technologies. His knowledge of Linux will be important as the
Library implements the latest in electronic remote access and web server
solutions. His expertise in Unix shell scripting and HTML authoring are
valuable in the maintenance of the Library's rapidly growing number of web
resources.
