The material presented in this publication is based mainly on the results of the Oriental Institute's second and third excavation seasons at Alishar Hüyük (1928-29). The 1927 season had been a test period during which certain fundamental points were established. In 1928, with increased knowledge and improved equipment and technique, more delicate chronological distinctions of the periods from the Hittite Empire were determined. In 1929 the excavation team concentrated on the strata preceding the Hittite Empire stratum. At the time of publication, in 1932, the material presented in this volume illustrated hitherto unknown or neglected elements of the Anatolian culture periods.
