Stony Brook University recently announced that an agreement was reached with a developer to build a five-story 135-guest-room facility on a portion of an 11-acre parcel of land east of the University Administration Building parking garage. The hotel will fill a need for campus accommodations: Stony Brook University hosts more than 500,000 guests and visitors every year to many events, activities, conferences, and symposia. In addition, thousands of patients treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center who have family and friends visiting from outside the area will find the on-campus hotel a welcome amenity. "The concept for a campus hotel has been under consideration for more than 20 years, and I am very excited to say that we will soon be able to offer this overnight guest accommodation service to the University community," said President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr. "Our goal is to offer a comfortable accommodation to the many thousands of visitors we invite to and host at Stony Brook every year, and it will soon be a reality." The University is working with a local developer — Port Jefferson, N.Y.-based Harbor Construction Management — to ensure that surrounding environmental vistas and existing natural vegetation along Nicolls Road are preserved. The new hotel, which is expected to be completed approximately two years following initial groundbreaking, will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. The developer, which is financing all construction and operating costs, is in final discussions with the Hilton Garden Inn for hotel management.
