George Clinton. the first Governor of New York State, writes to Thomas Jefferson, later the vice president of the U.S., concerning the Legislature's ceding of land in Montauk, Long Island, New York to the United States. This transaction eventually led to the construction of the light house located on Turtle Hill, which began on June 7, 1796 and completed on November 5, 1796, creating one of the nation's earliest historical national monuments.
