Lateral electric fields in the photoactive silicon bulk of Charge Collecting Devices (CCDs) displace the photogenerated charges from their nominal paths to the collection gates, altering the pixel position at which they are collected and causing subtle image distorting effects. Two particular sources for these lateral fields, “tree rings” and the edge effect, were studied using PhoSim, a novel Monte Carlo photon simulator, in order to isolate these effects and examine the extent and characteristics of their likely impact on astrometric measurements made by the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). Astrometric shift patterns were detected in fields of point sources of similar scale and behavior to those previously observed in Dark Energy Camera (DECam) CCDs for both effects. Organized shape distortions were also observed as a result of the directional nature of these effects.
