Onoto Watanna: The Story of Winnifred Eaton
This book does not contain recipes. It discusses the author and sister of the 1914 Chinese cookbook titled: The Chinese-Japanese Cookbook. That cookery volume indicates it was writen by Bosse and Watanna. In fact, they are sisters, Winnifred and Edith Maude Eaton, who took Japanese pen-names. Their early cook book was re-published in 2006 by Applewood Books making it available for a wider audience. Edith, considered as the mother of Asian American fiction, wrote the cookbook under the name of Sara Bosse; her contributions to the cookbook are questioned in this volume. She also wrote other items under the name of Sui Sin Far. Both sisters wrote many other stories and books. Their cookbook was a rewrite of articles previously published in American magazines, including Harpers. It has interesting twists. Neither of its authors were Japanese, and this book was written by Winnifred's granddaughter, Diana Birchill.
