dcterms.abstract | This book has fifty recipes with the ingredients listed. The recipe names are in English, Chinese, and romanized Cantonese, and a pronunciation guide is included for the reader. Before the recipes, there are forty pages about Chinese meals, table etiquette, and illustratations of proper chopstick usage. The recipes include a dinner party with a suggested menu and a red-paper dinner invitation in Chinese pasted into the book, as well as party games and drawings of a common finger game. Before each recipe there is a paragraph titled: `Description.` This `Description` appears after each ingredient list and before the method, and includes information about about culture and cuisine. The chapters are separated by a page of proverbs. After the recipes the reader is provided with approximate price of the meals and an explaination or how-to on ordering a Chinese meal. There are two-hundred-sixty recipe names listed. Also included is a Romanized Chinese and English dictionary of four-hundred-twenty-four foods and additional proverbs about the Chinese lifestyle and foods. The book is illustrated by John Kirk Sewall and came with a paper cover with caricatured drawing of a Chinese banquet table. | |
