dcterms.abstract | This book has ninety-three recipes. Chapter titles include: Comfort in a Bowl; Soup and Jook; Rice and Noodles; Dim Sum; Garden Fresh: Vegetables, Fish and Seafood; Chop Chop: Poultry, Pork and Beef; Bearing Gifts: Holidays and Family Celebrations; and Sweets. Before the recipes, there is information about topics such as presents, jook, jeng, noise, preserving traditions, the Hong Kong Cafe oned by Annabel's father, and tales of chopsticks. Each chapter is written by one or both authors. After the recipes, there is menu information with eight suggested menus. There is a discussion of fourteen equipment items and eight cooking techniques follows. Included is a ten page, eighty-four ingredient glossary, and three pages of cross-referenced index. Included is a chart for solid, liquid, and oven temperatures. Considerable information is given about the authors' parents, siblings and extended Chinese-American family in this book by an aunt and niece born sixteen days apart, who wrote it to pass food and cultural remembrances to their own children. Watercolor illustrations on cover and throughout are by Blonder, a designer and illustrator of books, dinnerware, and textiles. Chinese transliterations are in their parents native Lungdu dialect. | |
